In the last post from this Adventures Abroad tour of French Polynesia, we arrived on the South Marquesas Island of Hiva Oa where we visited the graves of Paul Gauguin and Jacques Brel in the town of Atuona. In this post, we weigh anchor and cruise to the farther end of Hiva Oa and the village of Puamau outside of which is the most important archaeological site in the Marquesas, the marae of I'lpona. After that, we will cross the short distance to the island of Tahuata for a brief visit. Please join us.

This is my sixth post from a recent visit to Switzerland and the first in which we meet up with our fellow Adventures Abroad travellers to start the tour of this wonderful country. We will also meet our friend and tour leader Victor Romagnoli with whom we have travelled many times. This post will feature a walking tour of old Zurich which I assure the reader will be most interesting, so please come along for the walk.
Hiva Oa - Visiting with Paul Gauguin
In his latest blog post, Dale Dunlop, The Maritime Explorer, continues on his French Polynesia tour with a stop at Hiva Oa - Visiting with Paul Gauguin, along with another notable figure that stayed on the island. If you are interested in what Adventures Abroad has to offer, please check out our Small Group Tours.
In the last post from this Adventures Abroad tour of French Polynesia, we visited the island of Ua Huka where we took in a number of museums, an arboretum, and enjoyed a nice walk back to the Aranui 5, the passenger/freighter that has taken us to the Marquesas Islands. After departing our mooring spot near three motus (islets) off Ua Huka, we motored to the island of Hiva Oa which is the second largest in the Marquesas and the first to be visited in the southern part of the archipelago. Here we will make two stops, the first being at the village of Atuona where we will visit the graves of two famous Europeans. I hope you can join us.
Ua Huka - Museum of the Marquesas
In his latest blog post, Dale Dunlop, The Maritime Explorer, spent the day visiting all six museums on the small island of Ua Huka - Museum of the Marquesas. If you are interested in what Adventures Abroad has to offer, please check out our Small Group Tours.
In the last post from this Adventures Abroad journey through French Polynesia, we visited the island of Ua Pou which I think everyone in the group enjoyed tremendously, especially the display put on by the local high school teenagers. After departing, we sailed overnight to the island of Ua Huka which lies northeast of Ua Pou and about 25 miles (40 km) due east of Nuku Hiva. Despite its small population of just over 670 inhabitants, it has no less than six museums most of which we will try to visit during our stay there. There will also be an opportunity for a hike back to the landing spot from high above Vaipaee Bay. But it all starts with a most unusual and spectacular maneuver by the Aranui 5 just to get us moored off Ua Huka. So please join us for another day of exploring in one of the remotest places on earth.

This is my 32nd and final post from our fall 2021 trip to Western Turkey with Adventures Abroad. The fact that I could write this much about an 18 day trip tells you just how many interesting places are included on this itinerary. In the last post, we visited the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara which covered thousands of years of Anatolian history and archaeology. In this post, we will visit Istanbul's legendary Topkapi Palace, the seat of the Ottoman Empire from just after the conquest of Constantinople to the mid-1800s. If there was any place more connected with the phrase 'palace intrigue' I've yet to hear of it. So please join our group on our final day as we tour a place renowned not only for its riches but also for the deeds and misdeeds of its famous inhabitants.
Ua Pou - Marquesas' Cathedral Island
In his latest blog post, Dale Dunlop, The Maritime Explorer's next port of call and one of his favourites on the French Polynesia Tour is the majestic Ua Pou - Marquesas' Cathedral Island. If you are interested in what Adventures Abroad has to offer, please check out our Small Group Tours.
In the last post, we made landfall at Nuku Hiva the first of the Marquesas Islands we visited on this Adventures Abroad French Polynesia Tour. There, among other things, we were treated to a display of the traditional island drumming, chanting and dancing in the shade of a sacred banyan tree. In this post, the Aranui 5 will motor some 50 km (30 miles) to the south to the island of Ua Pou which is also dubbed the Cathedral Island for its majestic peaks, the highest in the Marquesas. There we will witness another display of tribal ceremony, but this time by the high school students of the island. Please join us on another interesting onshore excursion.
