This is my eighth post from the March 2024 trip to Chile with Adventures Abroad led by champion empanada eater and all-around great guy, Chris Tripodi. In the last post, we cruised the waters of Lago Todos dos Santos and enjoyed the lovely German architecture of Puerto Varas in the Patagonian Lake District. After two days in Puerto Varas, we are on the move again as we fly to the remote settlement of Balmaceda on the Argentinian border some 715 km. (444 miles) South of the Lake District. From here we will take a bus for the two-hour ride to Puerto Chacabuco, a small village at the end of Aysén fjord which will be our base for the next three nights. On our first day in Chilean fjord country, we will spend an entire day cruising up the fjord to where San Rafael Glacier ends its journey to the sea from the Northern Patagonian Ice Field. While I've seen many glaciers in my time, I've never seen one close up from the ocean side. It should be a real exhilarating experience and I hope you'll come along for the ride.
On day two in Puerto Chacabuco we'll take a walk to a waterfall in Aiken Park followed by a traditional Patagonian barbecue. Let's get started.

This is my seventh post from the March 2024 trip to Chile with Adventures Abroad. In the last post, we visited the first of what I deemed to be the big three on this trip, Torres del Paine National Park and it far exceeded even my very high expectations for these famed mountains. From there we returned to Punta Arenas and took a flight to Puerto Montt and spent two nights in the Patagonia Lake District. While the weather was not as cooperative as it could be, we had a very full day exploring this part of Chile including a boat trip on Lago Todos Los Santos (All Saints Lake) that took us to a resort hotel on the border with Argentina. Along the way, we spotted a pudu, the world's smallest deer and stopped at a very interesting waterfall. So please join our group as we continue our exploration of Chile in the Patagonia Lake District.

Alas, this is my final post from the life-changing 2023 trip to Southeast Asia which started in Bangkok and will now end in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Adventures Abroad has delivered everything Alison and I could want on this odyssey through three completely different countries Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia. In my introductory post on the Adventures Abroad trip to Chile in the spring of 2024, I highlighted the big three as I called them – Torres del Paine, Atacama and Easter Island. After flying to Punta Arenas and driving the End of the World Highway we arrived at the first of them, Torres del Paine and what an arrival it was as we looked down at the Rio Serrano Hotel with its beautiful setting. In the last post from the 2023, Adventures Abroad tour of Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia I had the unpleasant, but necessary task of documenting our visit to the Killing Fields. Those events occurred within my lifetime and demonstrated, as does the current situation in Ukraine, that you can never take peaceful co-existence and human sanity for granted. Fortunately, my last two posts from this tour will feature a side of Cambodia that was far more civilized than what happened in the 20th century and left a legacy that is among the most important ever bequeathed to subsequent generations. I'm referring of course to the great Khmer archaeological complexes to be found near the city of Siem Reap, most notably Angkor Wat, but also including, literally, dozens of others that collectively constitute the largest religious complex ever built anywhere. I'll leave Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom for my final post from this once-in-a-lifetime trip and instead concentrate on a number of the lesser-known temple complexes as well as the city of Siem Reap in this post. Prepare to be very pleasantly surprised.

This is my fifth post from the fall 2024 tour of Chile with Adventures Abroad. Since I'm writing this in June 2024 that seems like a rather absurd statement since fall is over three months away – so what am I, a psychic? Not at all. One of the things about travelling on the other side of the equator is that the seasons are reversed and in Chile fall comes before spring in any calendar year. But enough about that. Alison and I visited the World Heritage Site of Valparaiso and in the last post we sampled wines at the oldest winery in Chile, Vina Santa Rita. In this post, we'll take the first of eight internal flights on this tour, from Santiago to Punta Arenas, a city I have long wanted to see. It is also the gateway to the Chilean portion of Patagonia via the aptly named End of the World Highway. So please join us on what promises to be one hell of an adventure to one of the nethermost spots on Earth.
