It's the third day of Adventures Abroad, Western Turkey Tour and we are headed out from Istanbul after seeing some of the most interesting sites in that city including Hagia Sophia which I described in the last post. Today we are headed for two more of the most important sites in the country, Gallipoli and Troy. Our guide Yasemin Reis advises that this will be one of two long days on the tour, but assures us that it will be worth the extra time it takes to arrive at our hotel in Canakkale. So please join us as we travel through the ancient lands westerners called Thrace and the Turks Rumeli or Land of the Romans.

In the last two posts, we finally got the Adventures Abroad, Western Turkey Tour underway with a bus tour of the Golden Horn and a walking tour of the Sultanhamet. We concluded the walking tour post at the Baths of Roxelana, but only because Hagia Sophia is worthy of its own recognition. Please join us as we visit what is arguably the most important church in Christendom even though it's now a mosque. After that, we'll conclude our tour of the Sultanhamet with a visit to the Cistern of Philoxenos aka The 1001 Columns.

This is a description of the first full day of an Adventures Abroad Tour of Western Turkey that Alison and I took in October 2021. Thanks to the pathetic state of the Turkish lira, at well under $5,000 Cdn this tour is one of the great bargains in travel today. In my first post from Turkey, I expounded on the reasons for visiting Turkey now with AA, although I did omit to point out what a bargain it really is. In the second, I introduced the Sura Hagia Sophia Hotel where we stayed both before, during, and after the trip. In the next two, we visited the fabulous Istanbul Archaeological Museums to get just a taste of some of the places we will visit on this tour. From hereon until the end of the tour I will describe the itinerary pretty well exactly as it played out from start to finish. Each day will provide enough material for at least one or more posts starting with this one on a trip around the Golden Horn. So let’s go meet our guide, our driver, and our fellow travellers and get this show on the road.

This is my second post from a visit to the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, one of the great museums of the world. In the first post, Alison and I visited the Archaeological Museum and spent most of the time admiring the incredible collection of sarcophagi on display there. In this post, we'll stroll the grounds and visit the Ancient Orient Museum, but first, we will make a brief stop at the Tiled Kiosk. Please join us.

This is my third post from a tour of western Turkey that Alison and I went on in October of 2021 before the Delta and Omicron variants of Covid effectively shut down the travel industry. In the first post, I explained the reasons that we chose Turkey and why we went with our preferred tour operator Adventures Abroad. In the second post, I extolled the virtues of the Sura Hagia Sophia Hotel where we stayed at the beginning and end of the tour. In the next two posts, we'll visit one of my favourite places in Istanbul, the Istanbul Archaeological Museums. While this museum is not on the Adventures Abroad itinerary there is enough free time to easily visit it either on the afternoon of the first day or on the last two days of the tour. I recommend seeing it first because it provides a great introduction to some of the many civilizations that have arisen in Turkey over the past 5,000 years.
