Alison and I have just returned from what many would describe as the trip of a lifetime. We spent almost three full weeks exploring both the well-known and many of the lesser-known islands of the massive French overseas territory collectively known as French Polynesia. In addition to spending time on Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora, we spent eleven days aboard the supply ship Aranui 5 visiting some of the remotest and least visited places in the world in the Marquesas Islands and the Tuamotu Archipelago. The tour was organized by Adventures Abroad and led by veteran tour leader Martin Charlton.

In the last post on this Adventures Abroad, Western Turkey Tour, we arrived at Bodrum, aka the ancient city of Halicarnassus. Our guide Yasemin had given us the day off to relax in this seaside resort and Alison and I used it to visit the remnants of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. We also had an opportunity to stroll along the promenade from where we had this great view of Bodrum Castle which is where we are headed now along with the rest of the AA crew. Please join us in touring the last place the Crusaders held in modern day Turkey.

The Ancient Cities, Vast Deserts, and Salty Seas of Jordan

In March 2020 I was minding my own business, leading a tour in Chile, when I was summoned back to Canada by a strong warning from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and in turn, my boss. Since then I had been counting the days until I could travel again. While I managed to travel around within Western Canada, nothing quite compares to the experience of getting on a plane and being crammed in a seat for 12+ hours while you wait in anxious anticipation for what your next adventure holds. Luckily, that was in the cards for me in October 2021.

In the last two posts, we visited the Roman acropolis of Pergamon and the Asclepeion where Galen learned his trade. These were both first time visits for Alison and me and definitely will be remembered as two of the highlights of this trip to Western Turkey with Adventures Abroad. Now it's time to get back on the bus and make our way to the coastal city of Kusadasi which will serve as our base to explore the many wonders around the ancient site of Ephesus. It's a drive of just over two hours providing we don't get stuck in traffic as we pass the outskirts of Izmir, Turkey's third-largest city. This is the route we will take marked in blue.
